Book 2 was originally proposed as an album but is more recently said by Grimes to be ”a treatise, or manifesto-type thing.”[1]
Background[]
Grimes initially teased the possibility of Book 2 being an album in an Instagram post on January 4, 2022, as she at the time had 18 finished songs (she has since finished multiple more songs for the album) but couldn't fit all of them on a single vinyl, so wrote about the idea of splitting the songs on two albums.[2] She officially revealed she was working on the album in an interview for Atmos Magazine later that year in March.[3] However, on September 17, she tweeted about "maybe" releasing Book 2, leaving the release of the album uncertain.[4]
Grimes released a video preview of a digital "Generation one" character on her elf.tech website in April 2023, and at the very end there was a supposed teaser cover for Book 2.[5] The cover reads "Grimes" "This is a transmission from the future" "Lore for Modern Magic" "The Light Ages".[6] This links Book 2 to the Chaos Manual, which also reads the same thing.
However, in an interview with WIRED published on August 8, 2023, she revealed[7] that Book 2 is not an album, but the name of the ideas found in the Chaos Manual instead.
She explained:[8]
❝ Book 2 is a treatise, or manifesto-type thing. I’ve been writing civilization proposals. But I also want to include something else. I’m working on a bunch of baby books. I’m working on one right now called Transhumanism for Babies. It’s about civilization building, for my kids. I can show you some of the stuff from it, let’s see. [She showed [the author of the article] illustrations—they are fanciful, anime-style drawings with a streak of Henry Darger.] The chapters are Culture for Babies, Fashion for Babies, Art for Babies, Vehicles for Babies. Interplanetary Babies, City Planning for Babies. AI Robotics for Babies. Megastructures and Exoplanets for Babies, Magic for Babies. I want to teach my kids things like, when you’re designing vehicles, what are the limits of design? I want to make beautiful, profound children’s content. We really need more of that. ❞
