Book 3 is a never realized album that would feature tracks by Grimes and other artists utilizing the GrimesAI vocal transformation service.[1]
Background[]
The possibility of the album was first theorized on July 9, 2023, when a playlist entitled "GRIMESAI" was posted on Grimes' Spotify page with the playlist cover art mentioning Book 1, 2 and 3.[2][3] Fans took this as confirmation that the album existed, however, Grimes quickly clarified that nothing was officially confirmed.[4]
Then, in an interview with WIRED published on August 8, 2023, Grimes said this:[5]
❝ I’m going to slowly release it, a song every three weeks for the next couple of months. Much to everyone’s chagrin, I’m releasing songs I made in the last couple months first. And then, when it’s out [Book 1], I want to mentor a bunch of the kids who have been making the Grimes stuff and make a competing AI album. And then have the AI-hive-mind-collective Grimes and the real Grimes face off. I’ve been calling that one Book 3. ❞
She explained further in an interview with Aespa for Rolling Stone:[6]
❝ it’s [Book 1 & Book 3] sort of an experiment about AI versus humanity. I’m working with a bunch of kids using various types of AI in the Grimes style. I’m feeding them training data and various things. They’re doing the AI thing and all the art for it. And then I’m doing my thing and the art for it. I want them to compete. ❞
According to Säfira, one of the artists who was invited for the album, there was no actual collaboration between them and Grimes.[7]
