Darkseid is a song by Grimes, featuring 潘PAN. It is the second track on Grimes' fifth album, Miss Anthropocene.
Darkseid is the Demon of Sexual Assault.[1]
Background and composition[]
The song was originally an instrumental titled Cryptid and was initially intended for rapper Lil Uzi Vert for an unreleased EP project. Since the EP was scrapped, Grimes used it for her own project, which she revealed in a December 2019 interview with Zane Lowe on his Beats 1 Radio show:[2]
❝ [Lil Uzi Vert] asked me to produce an EP for him once, and then I sent him the WeTransfer and he never downloaded it. And I was like, ‘Dude, I spent two weeks on this.’ It hurt my feelings. I think ‘Darkseid’ is from that session. That’s how I, like, have all these weird rap beats. It’s good when you can see when they don’t download it because then you can like…Get mad at them. He hasn’t done my manager and I see it. There’s one day left or whatever to download. Your files have not been downloaded yet. ❞
The concept instrumental was leaked alongside a demo version of 4ÆM and two mixes of a track called Deth Angels in November of 2018.[3] An early version of the song was leaked alongside other unfinished tracks of the album on October 25, 2019.[3] On November 24, 2019 the final version leaked as part of the full album leak.[4]

❝ I forget how I met [Lil] Uzi [Vert]. He probably DMed me or something, just like, ‘Wanna collaborate and hang out and stuff?’ We ended up playing laser tag and I just did terribly. But instrumentally, going into it I was thinking, ‘How do I make like a super kind of goth banger for Uzi?’ When that didn’t really work out, I hit up my friend Aristophanes, or Pan. Just because I think she’s fucking great, and I think she’s a great lyricist and I just love her vocal style, and she kind of sounds good on everything, and it’s especially dark stuff. Like she would make this song super savage and intense. I should let Pan explain it, but her translation of the lyrics is about a friend of hers who committed suicide. ❞

- The song was originally titled Cryptid and Cryptid (Heavy metal magazine).[6], and the title was originally intended to be changed to Dark Side.[7]
- 'Darkseid' is also the name of a supervillain from DC Comics series, being the main antagonist to Superman.[8]
