Darq Souls is an unreleased song by Grimes. It was intended for her fifth album, Miss Anthropocene.[1]

Background[]

In a 2020 interview for Pitchfork,[1] Grimes revealed that Darq Souls was supposed to be the fourth track off Miss Anthropocene, but it was later replaced by Violence.

In August 2020, the song was registered with 8 other songs;[2] potentially for the second part of Miss Anthropocene.[speculated][3]

In 2021, in a TikTok comment, Grimes revealed that Darq Souls was on a laptop that became 'fucked', meaning the original audio file is corrupted and lost.[4][5]

The song was anonymously leaked on December 26, 2021, though Grimes had mentioned of wanting to release it in its demo state a month prior.[6][7]

Grimes has repeatedly agreed to the idea of finishing and releasing Darq Souls, though has not said how would she do that.[8][9]

Composition[]

The instrumental is sampled from Not Gonna Get Us by t.A.T.u.[10] The outro violin is sampled from the song Silsila Ye Chahat Ka by Shreya Ghoshal.[11][better source needed]

Darq Souls was described as "theoretically the best song on the record", but became "an engineering nightmare", meaning she wasn't able to finish it, explaining to iZotope:[12]

My favourite video game is Bloodborne. There are no shields. It teaches you confidence, speed and aggression like nothing else. The track Darq Souls was perhaps never meant to see the light of day. From a mix perspective it had breakbeats sampled from t.A.T.u. and samples of fighter jets and tons of bass and like 100 layers of vocals. I got too wild and then there was no going back and the file barely opens.

Lyrics[]

[Intro]
(eh-eh)

[Verse]
Flying with my eyes open wide, (huh-uh)
Fairy of millennia, (huh-uh-oh-ah-uh)
I will crash with you when silver skies come alive
'n-black swans collide
You and I
Dark swans collide

[Chorus]
You and I-Faster than the speed of sound
Now come and get me, don’t let me down
Dark souls
Fighter pilot
I think I like it
A thousand miles an hour
Think you must be insane
You've got one thing on your brain
You were my first love soaring through my vein
Dark soul
I think I like it
A thousand miles an hour
Try to fight it

[Verse]
Flying with my eyes open wide, (huh-uh)
Fairy of millennia, (huh-uh-oh-ah-uh)
I will crash with you when silver skies come alive
'n-black swans collide
You and I
Dark swans collide

[Chorus]
You and I-faster than the speed of sound
Now come and get me, don’t let me down
Dark souls
Fighter pilot
I think I like it
A thousand miles an hour
Think you must be insane
You've got one thing on your brain
You were my first love soaring through my vein
Dark soul
I think I like it
A thousand miles an hour
Try to fight it

[Bridge]
I never toy, good thing you never asked
Baby don’t go so fast, you'll never know
You got more reasons to say you got the beat
You gave me nothing

Pulse inciting me (ha-uh-ah)
To be singing, hurriedly (ha-uh-ah)
((Now I go no further))
(eh, ah, ha-uh-ha-uh(push me))
(It brings us close together)
((Which one is it?))
(Push me, through)

[Chorus]
You and I - faster than the speed of sound
Now come and get me, don’t let me down
Dark souls
Fighter pilot
I think I like it
A thousand miles an hour
(A thousand miles an hour)
(A thousand miles an hour)
Dark soul
I think I like it
(A ^usand^iles an ^our)
(mmhmm-ihm)

Faster than the speed of sound
Now come and get me, don’t let me down
Dark souls
Fighter pilot
I think I like it
A thousand miles an hour
Think you must be insane
You've got one thing on your brain
You were my first love soaring through my vein
Dark soul
I think I like it
(A ^usand^iles an ^our)
(mmhmm-ihm)

(A thousand miles) an hour
