Grimes Wiki

Deth Angels (also called Death Angels or Archangels) is an unreleased instrumental by Grimes. It was intended for her album Miss Anthropocene.

Background and composition[]

The instrumental was leaked along with a concept instrumental of Darkseid and a demo version of 4ÆM in November of 2018.[1]

After the song leaked, Grimes said it was "for my new band" upon being asked by a fan on Twitter to talk about the song, also confirming that she was gonna add vocals.[2]

The song was likely intended for rapper Lil Uzi Vert. She revealed in an interview with Zane Lowe on his Beats 1 Radio show:[3]

[Lil Uzi Vert] asked me to produce an EP for him once, and then I sent him the WeTransfer and he never downloaded it. And I was like, ‘Dude, I spent two weeks on this.’ It hurt my feelings. I think ‘Darkseid’ is from that session. That’s how I, like, have all these weird rap beats. It’s good when you can see when they don’t download it because then you can like…Get mad at them. He hasn’t done my manager and I see it. There’s one day left or whatever to download. Your files have not been downloaded yet.

Trivia[]

  • Two versions of the song leaked: one called "X Deth angels INST OFFICIAL Nov.29.2017 Xtra hook.aif" and the other "2 deathangels arcangels.aif",[4] each having slightly different vocalization and structure.[5]
  • From the song title, angels are mystical entities that are described in Abrahamic religions as "(..) heavenly, or supernatural being[s], usually humanoid with bird-like wings, often depicted as a messenger or intermediary between God and humanity (..)".[6] Examples include guardian angels, messengers, corruptors, leaders like Satan, Michael, Samael and others.[6]
The closest reference to the song title may be the angel of death Azrael in Islam.[speculated][7]
