Enjoy the angels on earth is an unreleased song by Grimes. It was meant for her scrapped sixth album, Book 1.
Background[]
On December 22, 2021, The song first appeared as the intro and outro of the music video of Player of Games.[1]
On September 18, 2022, Grimes confirmed it would appear on the album.[2]
On January 14, 2025, the full demo, along with other demos, was leaked.[3][4]
Grimes gave an explanation as to why she didn't want to release the song:[5]
❝ I don't want to release 4 year old music after going thru everything I've been thru. I do apologize rrrrllly sincerely tho. I shud do a better apology frankly - I agree. but it would be a waste of by far the best art I've ever made to shut this down and go release ancient material that is like a pale first attempt at an idea that subsequently took four years to become the darkest wisest storm ❞

The lyrics may be written from the viewpoint of Lilith who in some mythologies is a consort of Lucifer, rather than Adam's first wife (Adam being the first male human on Earth according to The Book of Genesis).[speculated][6] The reference to the "Beast" is perhaps about Satan (conflated with Lucifer) as described in the Christian Book of Revelation.[speculated][7] The "Beauty" could also refer to myths about Lilith as a temptress and seductress from early Babylonian times.[speculated][8] There may be no direct link to La Belle et la Bête (Beauty and the Beast) - a fairy tale written by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve (1740) - except as a poetic reference. It is perhaps thematic for Grimes to write from the viewpoint of a tragic anti-heroine in these lyrics, since she seems attracted to the concept of conflicted female archetypes who are associated with the downfall of their powerful male consorts - Marie Antoinette & Jessica Atreides being other examples.[speculated]

The lyric 'I can't beat God - I fall like Lucifer' refers to the biblical story of the angel Lucifer – a once magnificent messenger of God, he became engulfed in self-pride and no longer loyal to God, which prompted God to expel him from Heaven, and thus he fell down to Earth and became the first fallen angel, also known as Satan.[9] In general, the two songs refer to the rebellion against God by many of his angels, all of whom became evil spirits on Earth.[9]

- An unreleased remix of the song by Grimes and Anyma[speculated][10] exists and was played at the AXE Ceremonia music festival in Mexico City on March 23, 2024,[11] and at Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on April 13 and 20, 2024,[12][13] featuring new beat and new lyrics. It is referred to as "Beauty and the Beast".[14][15]
- This is one of Grimes' favorite songs of all time.[16]
- Enjoy the angels on earth and Player of Games share the same Grimes' smirk sound effect at the very end of the songs.[17][18]
- From the song title, angels are mystical entities that are described in Abrahamic religions as "(..) heavenly, or supernatural being[s], usually humanoid with bird-like wings, often depicted as a messenger or intermediary between God and humanity (..)".[19] Examples include guardian angels, messengers, corruptors, leaders like Satan, Michael, Samael and others.[19]
- Since the song title says "enjoy the angels on earth", that is an euphemism of fallen angels - angels that were expelled from Heaven and fell down to Earth after they rebelled against God.[20]
