Grimes Wiki

Fantasia (Tears Are Data) is an unreleased song by Grimes and Anyma.[1][2]

Background[]

The song was first premiered during Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on April 13 and 20, 2024.[3][4]

On January 14, 2025, the demo version, which has a simpler structure, lyrics and an entirely different beat, along with other demos, was leaked.[5][6] Grimes said that she would release this song, but under a different name and group i.e. The Last Artists (with Anyma), and that it isn't done yet.[7]

Grimes went on to comment more about the song, namely how she and Anyma were unable to complete it:[8]

[..] Like fantasia is just a random mumble demo vocal and then a random demo jam track and every time we try to work on it it dies - seems like there's a lot of content like this [..]

Similar to how Music 4 Machines was traded, so Grimes was given executive control over Fantasia from Anyma in exchange for another unknown Grimes' song:[9]

Tbh Matteo just relinquished it to me (creative differences over a snare in the first chorus haha ) but I had to relinquish one of my favorite songs to him rip [..]

Grimes added that now the song is done, after failed reproduction attempts:[10]

It's actually great I rly underrated it at the time. Cuz the lyrics are kinda mid but we could never recreate the magic of the vocal and we fought too much over whether it shud be dance music or not so it got a bit over worked for a second it's done now tho

On May 25th, 2025, Grimes said that "(..) it's definitely a plan (..)" to release Fantasia, as the song is finished and ready, she enjoys it, but some other things must come before that.[11]

Lyrics[]

[Intro]

[Verse 1]
O-o-o-oh, Fantasia
I love you like the sun
O-o-oh, Fantasia-a
You told me I was the only one

O-o-o-oh, Fantasia
I love you like a dream
O-o-oh, Fantasia-a
You’re the only one like me

[Pre-Chorus]
'Cause I'd rather be an optimist
And I'd rather be wrong, than a pessimist, and right
Gotta something and pray that you'll be back[?]

These are unofficial lyrics

The lyrics in the demo version are noticeably missing the phrase "Your tears are data", which was added after.

The lyric "The cyborg would not recognize the Garden of Eden" refers to a paradise land created by God to shelter the first humans on Earth, Adam and Eve.[12]

Trivia[]

  • "Fantasia" is also the name of a culturally acclaimed Disney film.[13]
  • Grimes said that she liked and enjoys the demo version of this song, though wouldn't release it.[14]
