Hana Gabrielle Pestle, known professionally as HANA, is an American DJ, musician, singer, songwriter, streamer, record producer and music video director. She is a close friend and collaborator of Grimes.

Career[]

HANA began working on music in 2006. Her early work is largely acoustic-based, heavily utilizing the guitar. During this period, she recorded under her birth name Hana Pestle.[1] In 2013, upon meeting producer BloodPop, Hana chose to take a break from recording to focus on learning production.[2] Dissatisfied with her output, she decided to rebrand herself and change the direction of her music. In 2015 she re-emerged, changing her recording name to the mononym HANA.[citation needed]

Biography[]

Hana Pestle was born on July 11, 1989, in Atlanta, Georgia. She moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, when she was six years old, and to Billings, Montana, when she was eight.[1] Hana received her first guitar which her parents bought from a garage sale as a Christmas present when she was in fifth grade.[3] During her youth she took guitar and vocal lessons, and sung in choirs, as she "(..) was constantly singing — ever since [she] could talk".[3][4] Hana began performing live at the age of fourteen.[5] She would play at local cafés and book stores in Billings, and at the local farmers' market each weekend.[6]

When Hana was 17, she moved to Los Angeles to work with producers, who invited her after seeing her perform in Billings, with whom she collaborated on her first music.[4][5]

HANA has dated American musician and producer BloodPop since May 2013.[7] They became engaged ten years later in May 2023.[8]

Connection to Grimes[]

In addition to her solo work, she is also known for her support of the musician Grimes. HANA has performed as Grimes' backing vocalist on live shows and as the other member of their duet Trashique. In addition, the pair have collaborated on multiple songs and music videos.[9]

Grimes toured with Lana Del Rey for several of her Endless Summer tour dates. Grimes brought HANA on this tour to perform with her.[10]

Hana toured with musician Grimes throughout 2016. She opened for Grimes on the European dates of the Ac!d Reign Tour, which took place from February to March.[11] Later that year, the pair embarked on Grimes' March of the Pugs Tour, during which Hana performed alongside Grimes as a backing vocalist and band member.

In October 2016, Hana and Grimes released a video series titled The AC!D Reign Chronicles. It is composed of seven music videos filmed over two weeks in Europe. The songs included are Hana's three tracks from her HANA EP, and four tracks from Grimes' album Art Angels. The individual music videos were published to HANA and Grimes' respective YouTube channels, and a "Director's Cut", containing all seven videos in their "intended order", was uploaded to Grimes' channel.[12]

In March 2016, during the Ac!d Reign Tour, a duo called "Trashique" was formed of Grimes and Hana. Their only release was a cover, released in October 2017, of the Tegan and Sara's song Dark Come Soon as part of Tegan and Sara Present the Con X: Covers in support of the Tegan and Sara Foundation. [13][14] The group effectively disbanded after.

In 2018, HANA was featured on Grimes' single "We Appreciate Power".[15][16] She also produced a nightcore remix of the song.[17][18]
