Grimes explained the inspiration behind the song, and Book 1, saying:[2]
❝ I’m super inspired by the way women get pulled into orbits in this manner. There’s this weird dismissal of them. [Athena, Calypso, Persephone, the black swan, Anne Boleyn, courtesans, concubines, geishas] are some of the most interesting characters in history to me, and they’re so demeaned…. I feel like the most radical thing I could do right now is just become Marie Antoinette. ❞
