Miss Anthropocene is the fifth studio album by Grimes, released on February 21, 2020.
It was her last release with 4AD.
Miss Anthropocene (Rave Edition) - a remixed version of the album - was released on January 1, 2021.
Background[]
Grimes was initially working on two albums since at least February 2018. She revealed in her Instagram comments section:[1]
❝ [I'm releasing] one final album for my shit label and then my first album on a label of my choosing which im crazy stoked about eeeee. or i might go fully independent, researching options. the second one will be extreme darkness and chaos, the first will be highly collaborative and most glorious light. ❞
In March she remarked:[2]
❝ [The first album] its less collaborative now because i'm addicted to making music and i'm making music too fast to have a ton of features but i legit do wanna do a producer album in the future after i finish the 2 albums i'm working on currently ❞
Considering the sound, concept, visuals and overall theme of Miss Anthropocene, as well as the standard edition of the album having two collaborations total, it is safe to assume that it is the "extreme darkness and chaos" album, while the "highly collaborative and most glorious light" album remains unreleased and possibly scrapped, maybe being the scrapped sixth studio album, Book 1.[speculated]
Grimes mentioned the possibility of releasing an extended play or “a few more singles of synth-based stuff b4 the album because its mostly ethereal nu metal (ish), and I know a lot of ppl miss the synths and whatnot.“[3]
Miss Anthropocene was announced and supposed to be released in 2019, but, due to the death of her manager, as well as other hindrances, it was delayed until the following year.[4]
In November 2018 five songs at the time considered for the album leaked: two versions of Deth Angels, a demo of Darkseid titled Cryptid, an early version of We Appreciate Power and a demo of 4ÆM.[5] The full album was leaked two times: first in October 2019 and later in November 2019. The first leak featured unmixed and unmastered tracks with mild production differences, as well as an alternate tracklist order with some tracks still having their former names.[6] The second leak was more closer to the final version of the album.[7]
Inspiration[]
Grimes announced the album name and concept in an Instagram post:[3]
❝❞1. mis.an.thrope
noun:
a person who dislikes humankind and avoids human society.
2. Anthropocene: The Anthropocene is a proposed epoch dating from the commencement of significant human impact on the Earth's Geology and ecosystems
including, but not limited to, anthropogenic climate change. [...]
It's called Miss_Anthropocene. It's a concept album about the anthropomorphic Goddess of climate Change: A psychedelic, space- dwelling demon/ beauty-Queen who relishes the end of the world. She'scomposed of Ivory and Oil [...]
I love Godly personifications of abstract/ horrific concepts (For example, Mars as the Roman God of War) — so I wanted to update the list to include our modern issues. [...]
Each song will be a different embodiment of human extinction as depicted through a Pop star Demonology. The first song 'we appreciate power', introduced the pro-Al- propaganda girl group who embody our potential enslavement/destruction at the hands of Artificial General intelligence. [...]
Climate change is something I'm only ever confronted with in a sad/ guilty way.... Reading news and what not... so my goal is to make climate change fun (lol..??).... uhhh... (I mean, everybody loves a good villain... re: the joker, Queen Beryl).. so maybe it'll be a bit easier to look at if it can exist as a character and not just abstract doom.
Grimes explained in depth her idea:[8]
❝ [The album is named after this character you've created, Miss Anthropocene. Who is this character?]
I think one of the most human things you can do is sort of like create gods. Like, obviously, you look at like the earliest human art. So I, I, I was like, man, like, what would the new gods be like? Like, we're in this post-technological age. There's all these sort of like existentially terrifying concepts like social media or, you know, nuclear annihilation.
So I guess Miss Anthropocene, I thought, would be the sort of god because it seems the most pertinent to the current state of affairs. Um, but I sort of see her as like—on one hand, climate crisis is like a serious existential threat, but if you're kind of like a demon, like the demon of climate crisis, like, how do you make that beautiful?
And I thought maybe she sort of sees it as like, wow, this is like this singular time in the universe where, you know, intelligent life was created, and intelligent life created the means to destroy itself. And there's sort of a poetry in that concept. So, I feel I'm on a complicated rant here.
[No, no, no! It's so interesting, and it's such a big topic of this generation as you said, like, the main thing people are talking about in elections now is climate change and environmentalism, and it's such a big and heavy topic to tackle. Did it intimidate you at all to try and take this head-on in an album?]
I mean, I think the fact that I was so scared of it is like why I wanted to do it. You know, it's obviously pretty controversial, and a lot of people are like upset about it—about me even kind of like wanting to broach the topic artistically. But I also think that's part of the reason why you got to do it.
So, like, Miss Anthropocene is sort of like the title of the album, but each song for me was like a specific sort of like means of death or like personal crisis. The song You'll Miss Me When I'm Not Around is sort of about like suicide—I'm like, what would the god of suicide be like? Or the demon of suicide?
And, like, the song Delete Forever is kind of the goddess of addiction, or specifically like the goddess of opioid addiction. ❞
Grimes said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal:[9]
❝ “It’s a concept album, about anthropomorphizing climate change,” she says. Miss Anthropocene is “like, this death god.” But also: “It’s fun. I want to make climate change fun. People don’t care about it, because we’re being guilted. I see the polar bear and want to kill myself. No one wants to look at it, you know? I want to make a reason to look at it. I want to make it beautiful.” ❞
Retrospectively in 2022, she told Nnedi Okorafor for Atmos the following:[10]
❝ (..) I feel like part of the problem right now is the banality of villainy. I can’t name the fucking CEO of any of these oil companies. The villains of our current society, they’re so boring that I just don’t know who the fuck they are. And so I was like, “How do you villainize climate change? How do you make the Joker out of climate change?” Because people care about the Joker, and people care about comic book villains. The villains that we’re dealing with right now have cloaked themselves in anonymity through being exceptionally boring people. People really struggle with abstract concepts, and climate change is so nebulous. You see polar bears dying, and it feels like no specific people are responsible even though there are specific people who are responsible. And so it becomes hard to muster a reaction that is adequate. ❞
Name[]
- mis·an·thrope
- /ˈmis(ə)nˌTHrōp,ˈmiz(ə)nˌTHrōp/, noun:
- a person who dislikes humankind and avoids human society.
- An·thro·po·cene
- /ˈanTHrəpəˌsēn/, noun:
- an unofficial name for the current geological age, viewed as the period during which human activity has been the dominant influence on climate and the environment.
The title is a pun of the feminine title 'miss' and the words 'misanthrope' and 'anthropocene'.[3] Grimes said she came up with this combination while saying words randomly around the word 'anthropocene'.[11]
- Though she admitted that she regretted giving the album this name, as she had renewed her faith in humanity.[12]
New Gods[]
On Grimes' website each song was either a Demon or a Goddess,[13] with the song New Gods being the "album's thesis".[14]

---|---|---|---|

The idea for "New Gods" to represent the societal problems came from Jack Kirby's comic book of the same name. Grimes explained:[15]
❝ How do we emotionally deal with this stuff? Do you know Jack Kirby’s ‘New Gods’? I just got really compelled by the title. I was like, yeah. I want to make new gods. I want to make up the goddess of climate change, or in this case, the goddess of opioid addiction. Some of the first great art that we see is the personification of painful or beautiful abstract concepts as gods. Maybe that helps people cope better. Maybe that helps society come together better. It seems easier to digest certain things when they’re fictionalized. ❞
In promotional posters for Violence, the following was written:[16]
❝ THE NEW GODS HAVE EVOLVED TO COMPETE WITH THE MODERN-DAY TECHNOLOGY THAT IS MAKING THE OLD GODS OBSOLETE. INSTEAD OF, FOR EXAMPLE, THE GOD OF WAR - WE NOW HAVE THE GODDESS OF CLIMATE CHANGE (MISS ANTHROPOCENE), THE GODDESS OF NUCLEAR WAR, THE GODDESS OF PLASTIC SURGERY, WELCOME TO THE END OF THE WORLD; THE BEAUTY AT THE END OF THE WORLD...
THE NEW GODS REPLACE THE OLD GODS LIKE THE NEW WAYS REPLACE THE OLD WAYS. INSTEAD OF THE GOD OF WAR - WE NOW HAVE THE GODDESS OF CLIMATE CHANGE (MISS ANTHROPOCENE). THE GODDESS OF NUCLEAR ANNIHILATION, THE GODDESS OF PLASTIC SURGERY. WELCOME TO THE END OF THE WORLD: THE BEAUTY AT THE END OF THE WORLD...
THE HEAVENLY REALM HAS BECOME A CORPORATION CALLED "MEDIA EMPIRE" WHERE WE ALL THE GODDESSES ARE EMPLOYED. MEDIA EMPIRE IS THE CORPORATION THAT RUNS THE SIMULATION WE ARE CURRENTLY LIVING IN. ❞
Album Visuals[]
Designed by Rupid Leejm[]
On September 3, 2019, Grimes first teased the artwork for Miss Anthropocene,[17] however she was "talked out" of using this version:[18]
❝ This was the original Miss Anthropocene album cover which I commissioned from one of my *favourite* artists @rupid79m 🤍🤍 I polled a bunch of ppl and everyone said not to use it (??) but I wish I trusted my gut. I fucking LOVE this painting. Maybe there’s a way to utilize it still (very open to ideas if u guys have ideas). I also love commissioning and/ or buying prints and art. It’s something I just got into this year. It’s a great way to support visual artists during the quarantine. Some Artists I dig are @wlop @ya.hime @vickisigh @belgeist
Normally I draw the covers myself I just wasn’t feeling it for miss A after like ten failed album covers.
Ps I love what we did w Ryder and Gmunk. Not hating on that just wish I’d even kept this as the illustration in the program maybe instead of my drawing which.. is fine but not blowing my mind haha ❞
Designed by GMUNK, Peiter Hergert and JOJX.[]
The album was instead released with artwork designed by GMUNK, Peiter Hergert and JOJX, with GMUNK describing the concept and process in detail on their website:[19]
❝ The merger of Fantasy, Science-Fiction and Climate Activism is a sweet spot for all of us, so when the ultra-creative Artist Grimes reached out for a collaboration – it was love at first sight. To get started, she sent us the creative direction for her upcoming album Miss Anthropocene – it was an epic fifty bible of absolutely beautiful creative that essentially told the entire back story of the album, including the narrative of all the various goddesses, simulation theories and the all-encompassing multi-media cooperation overseeing humanity’s pulse, and all the thought-provoking fictional passages around it.
It was the perfect merger of all the themes we adore, wrapped in a very impressive shell of pure creativity. She had developed her own mythological world and wanted us to create a ‘photoshop interface of the future’ that contained all the easter eggs and backstory from the creative direction of the album – which was a lot of content to include. The style was to be maximalist ‘Oblivion UI’ crossed with Grime’s grungy palette of Blacks and Pinks. The program itself was themed on simulation theory mixed with World and God creation – essentially a first person narrative where Grimes was logged into the program space and running the simulations herself.
The ConceptNaturally when you think about Photoshop and effects software like Autodesk Maya and Houdini and all of their palettes, they share similarities in having all these palettes, shelves, icons and docks and their various tools for content creation. We took that interface structure and wanted to push infinite detailing into it to fill it out and establish a grid while coming up with all the icons, palettes, color pickers and simulation tools of this futuristic world. We wanted it to have optical texture as well, so we projected it onto a display monitor and photographed it practically – resulting in a nice organic layer of monitor texture, moiré and light bloom to make it look more optical and realistic.
Grimes supplied the illustrated hero image in the center – and essentially gave us a library of other line art drawings and 3d renders as well. We of course figured that she was the main Miss Anthropocene – and when we received the story of the album we decided that someone is actually working on this goddess creation within the interface. So we took the illustrations and altered them a bit, giving them texture and richness to integrate into the interface we were creating.
There is a ton of conceptual detail packed into this. Once we read the brief and the songs started to come in, we listened to “Violence” and “My Name is Dark” and had a very clear idea of what was going on in her head, which gave us the inspiration to just flow and design on impulse. Each module on the left and right side of this workstation, are all based on songs and the song titles. So on the left side you basically have a doomsday counter that’s incessantly tossing out functions. On the right side of the screen you have political apathy, and the violence tool. While everything is designed to look like palettes that would come from these established programs, all the content is derived from the songs and their messaging to place it firmly in the world that Grimes had created.
The ProcessThe design process was very methodical. Working with frequent collaborator Peiter Hergert, we broke the composition into grids, sections and palettes – defining the interface grid structure while creating functional palettes within the system. We were essentially creating the photoshop tools of the future – and that was exhilarating creatively. In doing it and establishing this world, you let your creativity wander and lose yourself in that fantasy place where you are almost reimagining the software itself. As a result, you end up designing a palette that doesn’t exist, yet someday when our tools of the future become reality and you are combining photoshop and 3D-printing capabilities to create organic matter that breathes on its own – what would those palettes look like? And then you infuse a bit of mythology and mysticism into it as well and you have this very strange futuristic creative tool. ❞
The figure at the center of the cover is a digital drawing based on a mirror selfie taken by Grimes of herself painting her breast, which she then traced and "made fancy". The cover is representing the "simulation that we live in" as built by the New Gods.[20]
However in December 2020, digital versions of the album were changed to feature the original artwork commissioned by Rupid Leejm.[21]
Designed by Grimes[]
Some failed album covers were included in the eBay and Maccarone Gallery collection "A Decade of Grimes".[22]
The Wall Street Journal reported the following in an interview with Grimes in regards to unrealized visual ideas:[24]
❝ She has this idea, though she thinks it’s likely too expensive to pull off: She’s sitting naked at a table like it’s The Last Supper, only she’s surrounded by endangered-animal corpses, and she—Grimes/Miss Anthropocene—is eating the bloodied bits of raw flesh. “Like, I’m eating an elephant head.” She’s got bigger plans even than that. “What I really want to do are these pro-apocalypse PSAs, where I light a tree on fire and I’m like—” she snaps her fingers, does jazz hands, “Climate change! Yeah. Or, I’m there eating zebras and elephants...all this terrible stuff.” Ideally, she’d like to see these PSAs on MSNBC. ❞
It's possible that the public service announcements were redeveloped into the following images below:[speculated]
Tracklist[]
Although Miss Anthropocene was intended to be a double album, in a Q&A Grimes explained:[25]
❝ [What happened to blaze forever and Nymphs At Versailles?] Honestly just like, I don’t know. Had a crazy year, kind of stopped working on music, kind of stopped caring about music. As you know my manager passed away and then when I finally got in with my new manager and stuff, we were kind of "let’s just choose to finish songs and put out the album," like fuck it like stop working you know. ❞
