Shall I Compare Thee is an unreleased song by Grimes that was intended for her album Miss Anthropocene.
Background[]
In April 2019, in an interview with Flaunt, Grimes said:[1]
❝ I hate [four track from the then upcoming album including Shall I Compare Thee] all these songs now. I might even replace them all. I'm supposed to be finishing the album this month or whatever, but I've been making a shit ton of new music instead. Which is a really bad idea.
I read a book on speed painting, about how you just lay it down and become satisfied with it. So I'm trying to do a bunch of stuff like that right now. It does feel better, because it just contains more life. ❞
Despite "hating" the song, a snippet was used in Flaunt's behind the scenes video of their photoshoot.[speculated][2]
The song appeared on the early artwork for Miss Anthropocene,[3] placed between IDORU and We Appreciate Power, but it was ultimately scrapped.
Composition[]
The song embodies her speed-painting creative methodology of the time, and was recorded in "like, two hours." She described the song as "Visions-y".[4]
Meaning[]
In a Grimes interview with Cultured magazine, it is revealed that it's a love song that's ''lo-fi, airy, and refreshing in its simplicity.''[5]
