1st: SCORE: 7.8
so im graduating from casual vegan to somewhat-serious vegan (though it seems heretical to eat anything other than ben&jerrys lol). in light of this, I will be rating different vegan ice cream options on this tumblr as i can only assume that if you’re anything like me the biggest obstacle between you and veganism is the ever-present desire for ice cream.
** disclaimer: i still love ben & jerrys and if ur gonna eat ice cream they’re super ethical not to mention its pretty much the best ice cream around.
so, ok: i’m trying coconut ice cream, theres no dairy, soy or gluten and its pretty good actually. there are big chunks of peanut brittle in this. i feel like the coconut water craze is probably screwing over some farmers somewhere… but this is also supposedly 100% organic, and i feel like ‘organic’ implies farmers rights to some degree, but i don’t know.
In any case, this is better than president’s choice (the canadian no-name brand) ice cream, although slightly more expensive. I feel like this was $6.89 or so, but its also at least 3-4 snacks if u ration it out reasonably, and president’s choice would certainly not be so generous with the brittle.
i guess i do feel a bit sick from it, but it was the first thing i ate today so that may not be the fault of the ice cream.
Overall I’ll give it a 7.5. I think other flavours from this brand might be better as i think the coconut and peanut butter flavours conflict with each other slightly. I’ll inform you when i try more flavours and more brands. i should probably stop procrastinating now

Something along those lines. well, its a little complicated to give an exact time because once you finish an album you have to mix and master it, and then it takes at least 3 months lead up for press, manufacturing etc. so thats a weird variable
the other thing is that before visions came out I had already been on diy tours for over a year and then continued to tour until april, so I haven’t had that much time to work.
also, I think people forget that the first music i ever played period was me making my first album (geidi primes) and that I’ve only been making music for a couple years. Its really important to me to improve as a musician instead of just pushing out these (perhaps endearingly) sketchy records and never actually learning my craft. It’s really important to me that the next album is better than visions technically, but its also really important to me that it has the same heart and soul and isn’t rushed.
I also might do some crazy things… that i dont want to say yet, that might make it a bit longer, but will be reeaaally worth it. theres also a lot of wack stuff going on behind the scenes that im not allowed to talk about it, and i feel kind of paralyzed until i can get that stuff out of my life
so to answer your question, ideally early next year but it might be longer. The most important thing is that its good.

ok just looked at my tumblr and its like soooo dark (besides the malala post - cuz shes awesome), so anyway:
yesterday ravi james and i stopped by this AMAZING place called Nick’s Spaghetti House on commercial drive in vancouver.
you should definitely check this place out - i didnt eat the cheese cake cuz its not vegan but everyone said it was off the hook. i had gnocchi with red sauce, which seems pretty vegan as far as i can tell. but honestly, the real killer was the spinach ravioli with white sauce (still veggie if u are interested). i also had a bite of james’ meat ball and it was pretty stellar
in any case, the best part is the decoration and layout. its apparently been there for like, 50 years or something.
oh also, it seems kind of expensive, i think the gnocchi was 17 bucks, however i got three huge meals out of it. its massive. but they only have styrofoam takeaway containers so u might want to bring ur own takeaway container if u dont want to use styrofoam.
also the service was really good and they were really nice and u get free bread.

i remember once watching my friend raf from braids playing a show, and some people were doing something and she was just like “hey - shut up" and they got really embarrassed and shut up. so u can always do that lol. if your on stage u have power. ur playing to a room full of people who want to see you, so if someone is disrespecting you they are also disrespecting the audience.
but anyway, 99% of people are really awesome. they are coming to ur show cuz they like you. i have bad fan experiences occasionally but most people are really great. plus as things are becoming increasingly diverse they become more chill and more accepting, and I’ve noticed a lot more female acts on blogs lately
if u set a precedent of respect u will generally be respected. i had waaaay more issues initially than i do now. but i made a point of surrounding myself with the right people and cultivating a respectful atmosphere
like - u should check out beyonces touring situation. all female team etc. she didn’t want photographers so now press cant come block the front row and bother her with flashes and stuff. u can totally make it how u want it to be. people might discourage that, but whatever
u also dont need to play in bars which, in my experience, is where harassment typically occurs lol. i really want to start looking into alternative spaces cuz i want to play more all ages shows. of course this stresses agents cuz its not as easy but u know, as james was saying just cuz something is the industry standard doesn’t mean it has to be.

of note if you are trying to be vegan - a couple weeks ago i suffered an attack of exhaustion where i slept for like, 4 days straight and felt so exhausted i could barely walk and i believe its because i was in the zone and didnt bother trying to find protein and so my body started to break down. so make sure u get protein if u are considering veganism
tempeh, avocado, nuts, beans etc.
if you eat this stuff regularly then u dont have to worry about anything, but u need to make sure that u dont solely live on potatoes, because it will end badly
also like, i think being super ‘hardline’ vegan isn’t always the best idea if not eating or eating badly is ur only other option. it might be easier if you give urself a break every once in a while. me and james aren’t vegan when we are eating at someones house for example cuz we dont want to stress anyone out and its nice to eat other things sometimes.

of note if you are trying to be vegan - a couple weeks ago i suffered an attack of exhaustion where i slept for like, 4 days straight and felt so exhausted i could barely walk and i believe its because i was in the zone and didnt bother trying to find protein and so my body started to break down. so make sure u get protein if u are considering veganism
tempeh, avocado, nuts, beans etc.
if you eat this stuff regularly then u dont have to worry about anything, but u need to make sure that u dont solely live on potatoes, because it will end badly
also like, i think being super ‘hardline’ vegan isn’t always the best idea if not eating or eating badly is ur only other option. it might be easier if you give urself a break every once in a while. me and james aren’t vegan when we are eating at someones house for example cuz we dont want to stress anyone out and its nice to eat other things sometimes.

ok, god damnit. First of all — these ‘stereogum takedowns’ are really stupid. Like, one of these happened to me when Visions first came out. Not only was it terrible journalism, but it was fucking sexist (suggesting that I’m not as admirable as my peers because I don’t “tap into [my] womanhood and sexuality as a source of power.” Um
So first of all assholes, you have NO fucking right the be standing on a feminist pedestal. Your article about me in this series based it’s criticism on attacking my refusal to sexualize myself which is so immensely fucked like… i dont think i need to explain why it’s fucked.
Secondly, you can’t just rip apart an artist because you “feel” like his song is about something it’s not about. You even acknowledge that there is no basis in fact for assuming that “On fraternity” is written from a female perspective or about a female experience.
It doesn’t come close to “mansplaining”. I live with the fucking person who wrote this song, and I can assure you I’ve never heard him mansplain anything. This song is about being JAMES and the way that JAMES feels and you have no right or reason to attack him. fucking surfer blood doesn’t even get it this bad
James doesn’t have a publicist or a label or money or an agenda. He’s making art and he’s releasing it. I’m so tired of people jumping on every possible controversy they can conjure because they need web traffic. We don’t make art because we want to be in tabloids, you probably didn’t start an indie music blog beccause you wanted to make tabloids
