1st: how to make music for (almost) free (u should prob buy a mic/ interface and u might appreciate some instruments)
and i guess you’ll need a computer… so that might be expensive. BUT if ur reading this you probably have one :)
so yeah, ppl always ask me to make a tumblr tutorial on how to make music, so here it is
first off, the best program (in my opinion) is ableton live. however, garageband is perfectly acceptable and i made visions on garageband. its kind of the same thing but simpler.
when u open it, it will look like this:
if you hit tab, it will turn into this window (which is how I usually work because I like seeing the tracks horizontally):
its pretty strait-forward. the audio track is where you record audio, such as ur voice through a microphone or a guitar or smthn.
You record audio by clicking the black dot in the audio channel as well as the black dot beside the yellow OVR thing in the upper left. you will want to record audio with headphones on, so that you can hear any other things you may have recorded in order to keep time, stay in key etc. without getting the sound of the backing track into ur recording.
there is also a metronome which is the two dots beside the 4/4 thing (which is ur time signature). if u click on the metronome button a click will play at whatever BPM (beats per minute) that ur track is set at. the default bpm is 120, but u can make it whatever u want.
note on bpm:
most pop songs are about 128. the current max martin-y pop is around 135 (beauty and a beat for example). but u can make great dance music at like 116. the slower the tempo, the more percussive stuff u have to play with.
So, microphones:
If you can’t afford a cheap microphone there is a built-in microphone in ur computer that works fine, depending what u want to do. For the best recording, you probably want to record using a condensor mic and a pre amp, but these things are expensive. I only just started using these things a month ago, so its probably fine not to use them if u aren’t trying to sound like taylor swift (who does sound amazing, but that record was probably very expensive to make).
you will probably use a dynamic microphone - which is also easy to use live, so its a good purchase. I would suggest an SM58 or SM58 beta. they are cheap and nearly indestructible.
You will also need an XLR cable to attach the mic to an interface. an interface is what you use to record audio and send it to your computer. It will attach to your computer via USB.
I recorded visions on an interface like this :
you can get one of these on craigslist for probably about 50 - 200 dollars, depending on ur city.
ok so - you install this and open ableton - insert the male end of ur XLR cable to the mic in on the interface, and the female end into your microphone.
if you click command+comma, this will open:
as you can see the buffer size is at 2048. This is the quality of playback. If you lower this, you will find it is easier to record. I bring this down to 90 to record vocals and stuff and then when im mixing all the tracks together after I’ve recorded them I bring it back up to 2048 so i can hear what I’ve done at full quality.
The audio input device is where you select your interface as the input device if you have one, but just leave it if you’re using the built in microphone. You can send your sound out of monitors that you can attach to your interface but this is unnecessary. if you’re starting out i would just use the headphone jack for headphones or computer speakers or whatever.
*** Also FYI - the best headphones that you can get cheaply are the audio technica ATHM50s. they’re like 128 bucks or smthn and they’re super nice. also i know this all seems expensive, but i really feel like if you’re gonna spend money on anything, the emotional rewards of making music are totally worth it. if you think about other things you do recreationally its probably more expensive than this.
ok so ya. thats how you record audio. if you click control+T you make a new audio track and u can just record as many of these as u want. midi is a different story but ill get into that later.
oh, also - In the upper left corner you will see a folder called audio effects. if you click on this you’ll see reverb, delay, chorus etc. You can just play with these to figure out what they do, thats prob the best way to learn.
so ya! thats how to record audio. Once you have the basics u can just start googling how to do things on ableton and teach urself.
if anything is unclear let me know and ill update. also if u want to know how to do particular things i can try to go into it but im not super expert at this stuff cuz i figure it out as i go along.

13th: hey guys — so here’s the deal with the ‘guestlist’ thing
at every show the band gets a certain amount of guest list spots which are like, free passes for the friends of the band. When I’m in countries where I don’t know anybody I like to give these out to people cuz then, u know, more ppl can see…

19th: its not until you’re actually in a really positive relationship that isn’t abusive or manipulative where you feel supported in everything that you do and you never feel guilty about working or doing your own thing that you realize how incredibly life affirming a relationship can be
19th: honestly the concept of ‘doing it all night’ just sounds like torture to me. everyone is always singing about this, but do any of these people actually have sex for like 8 + hours? seems like it would be terribly painful
19th: had coffee in indonesia backstage so i had the package cuz we were making french press and on the back it was like ‘produced in indonesia, packaged in ohio’ and then i guess had then been shipped back to indonesia…
im sorry but that is one of the wackest things I have ever seen

19th: everyone is so terrified of aging. even people i really wouldn’t think would be fazed by this stuff like, ive heard almost all of them express some kind of fear of aging at some point. i dont get it. i mean, im utterly terrified of dying but im not particularly opposed to having wrinkles on my face.
glad to be 25 and finally losing this crappy baby fat on my face that im sure has at least partially contributed to how im constantly infantilized by the media and i cant wait til im like 100 and i can get away with all kinds of crap and finally get my seniors discount

19th: taylor swift
i guess the way i feel is that there is a rather misconstrued idea of what taylor swift is or how much control she has over her career. Like, outside of a few songs, she actually has sole writing credits on most of RED and she has at least partial credits on every song. which is one of the most successful records ever. I dunno, when i put the pieces together like… shes super young, she made an incredible record, plays a lot of her own instruments, is an extremely talented lyricist … that all seems very impressive to me. I wasn’t doing anything cool when I was 22. I don’t like how people fault taylor swift because shes pretty or because she grew up in a wealthy family or because she sings about love. I see how these things can make her less relatable, but she can’t control where she came from. and as far as i was aware most pop stars generally sing about love and we’ve never given them any shit for it.
as far as i can tell people seem to hate taylor swift on the grounds that her audience is mostly young women or that she is conservative with her clothes or has a history in country music or something. i dunno. like, if you buy into that stuff you’re just as susceptible to marketing as the people you criticize on those grounds. listen to her music. its about music. all this peripheral stuff is irrelevant. If you love music, then you’re in it because you love music and thats what you’re actually supposed to be evaluating and it really shouldnt matter how people look or who their audience is or where the came from.
honestly, almsot every song on red (which i’ve heard is a reference to joni mitchell’s ‘blue’ which is pretty badass) is really truly amazing. trouble, state of grace, all too well, i almost do, red, 22, holy ground, sad beautiful tragic… like these are all CLASSIC songs. really amazing songs and if i could ever write a song as good as T swift does i would be pretty fucking proud of myself. i dunno it seems like everyone goes out of their way to discredit young women or make their accomplishments seem less important (including other young women), i don’t think we should participate in that.

22nd: maybe i should either start following more tumblrs or stop following the cats and ghibli tumblrs cuz i just realized the past week has just been way too many retweets of cats and ghibli gifs
24th: i dont mean 2 be a dork, but can we all acknowledge how beautiful the GD one of a kind album art is? I’m not the kind of person whos super into album art or really cares about owning things on vinyl or anything like that, but this is pretty amazing. was thinking of doing some kind of bound book-like thing for the next grimes record.
its also fairly indestructible which is a bonus @ the moment seeing as im on tour

now that im 6 episodes in i realize that its way more complex than i thought it was originally.
now that im 6 episodes in i realize that its way more complex than i thought it was originally.
26th: People like to argue with me when I say I’m a feminist. I think this is because of misconceptions about feminism, but also because of misconceptions about what constitutes sexism. It’s not like anyone explicitly stops me from doing the things I want to do in this day and age, and I think therefore a lot of people assume that gender equality has been achieved. But as someone who has always been involved in fields that are typically considered to be ‘masculine,’ (whether it be science, or now music/ production/ film) I’m incredibly accustomed to the kind of sexism that the article above is talking about and it’s difficult to explain to people who don’t experience it because it’s not a super tangible or obvious thing.
but yeah, the fact that people would be ‘shocked’ to discover that Elise Andrew is a woman kind of pisses me off and just proves how pervasive this kind of mindset is. blarhg
and p.s. im not implying that making these kind of assumptions make anyone an asshole. im just noting the weird conditioning wherein if the sex of said accomplished person is not specified our default expectation is that they’re a man
also i jsut realized: shout out to national geographic for being awesome

27th: met kiko mizuhara today on a photo shoot! she was really nice and is coming 2 the show 2nite - sick
27th: I feel like when travelling you have to go SO out of your way in order to do things in an eco friendly manner and even sometimes when you try your hardest it’s impossible. Like, sometimes on airplanes they refuse to fill up my canteen and force me to either not drink water or drink from a plastic cup. I dunno, the obsession with sanitation has gotten to the point where we’re all going to die from all the plastic in the water we drink because we’re so afraid of bacteria. I’d rather get food poisoning than wish cancer on the entire planet. Everyone is so terrified of getting sued because of the slight chance that one customer might get sick so everyone has to be subjected to poisonous disinfectants etc. I just found out that they wash every towel in the hotel rooms you stay in even if you don’t touch them. Sometimes I just want to give up and permanently move deep into the canadian northwest and wait for the entire planet to cave in on itself.
I know it’s annoying to talk about this stuff but as someone who has to be at airports on an almost daily basis and rarely has control over the environment I live in, I just feel so defeated and like I either have to not have a career or have this massive carbon footprint and be subjected to tons of chemicals all the time. it makes me want to quit. its just brutal. people just really don’t seem to care and seem totally shocked and freaked out if you like, bring your own cutlery because you don’t want to use plastic or if you don’t want to take a plastic bag and would rather just carry what you bought or whatever. Is that so insane?

29th: i looove this hunger cover. This was one of the best shoots I’ve ever done for numerous reasons. i mean, rankin is a genius and everyone was really nice and good at their job and the coffee was strong as hell (always a bonus). but i really loved that this doesn’t look particularly doll-like or feminine or super different from how I look in real life anything like that. which of course is part of the fun, like making something fantastical and different from what could ever exist. but this was super comfortable just in terms of what i personally want to project to the world as claire. thats part of rankins art i think tho. hes really good at capturing people. cant stress how awesome the stylist was on this one too.
29th: this is an excerpt from this article published by the guardian: http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2013/mar/29/taylor-swift-22-hipsters
and james from elite gymnastics wrote about it here very well: http://deadgirlfriends.tumblr.com/post/46646281368/this-is-a-quote-from-a-guardian-article-called

unlike the author of this article, who can’t seem to fathom the concept of appreciating art simply on the basis that its good but seems to require an explanation other than the fact that the music is of quality, I just like it and i don’t feel the need to explain myself.

1 take delight or pleasure in (an activity or occasion): Joe enjoys reading Icelandic family sagas. Claire enjoys listening to taylor swift.
hope this clarifies.

29th: i apologize for being emo about stuff earlier. we are chronically under slept when on tour and i tend to have breakdowns in airports anyway cuz im terrified of flying. I actually came up with some really good ideas tho, which ill be implementing shortly. In the meantime, this is the last time ill be emo on tumblr. It is ridiculously fruitless to complain. (and perhaps a bit unflattering) :/
