8th: this is the chopped and screwed version of the christmas song my brother jay worthy (now known as london drugs - which is actually a canadian chain store so its an extra witty name because of it’s secretly wholesome undertones) and i made 2 years ago in an attempt to avoid christmas dinner
we ate an entire box of ferrero rochers or however u spell it while creating this song

9th: Best Snack Idea invented by my grandma who actually once won a prize at a county fair for this recipe so if that’s not a testament to how good it is i dont know what is:
Take some peanut butter (ideally chunky)
mix with a certain amount of icing sugar until its at like, a fairly solid ish texture so u can roll it into a little ball or if you become more skilled more of an ovaloid shape except 3d instead of flat
there are exact measurements but i dont have the recipe on me
next melt some chocolate chips or a finer chocolate if u want to be classy
poor the melted chocolate over the shape like in the pictures above, so its coated in chocolate. the first picture has a bite taken out of it to show the peanut butter inside
oh yeah and make them on tinfoil and put that in the freezer then later u can peel them off
i guess thats a waste of tinfoil theres probably a more environmentally friendly way to make them i suppose ill try out some other techniques
in a couple hours it will turn into a solid chocolate treat

16th: this song is so good
twas co produced with arca, who is obviously awesome (and worked on yeezus)
** additional thoughts:
the more i get to know twigs the more i like it. like, this is so brutally intimate, her vocals are so upfront and so untouched production wise (except for the low voice thing)
it also feels like, explicitly ‘internet’ music. i dont really know how this could be done live, but i really like that about it. i hate thinking when im making something like 'how am i gonna do this live??’ i mean im sure she’ll find a way and im sure it’ll be awesome but i like how compared to most music happening right now this seems really intentionally about the experience ofthis particular recording of it rather than selling tickets to some future live shows or whatever.
+ the beat is also just.. mindblowing. its like achingly simple and then the chorus is so insane. it reminds me of the sound design on existenz (the cronenburg film) it is really unique
especially with this footage as context, it reminds me of what the sound design at the beginning of antichrist would be like if it wasn’t music lol

16th: The KLF - important information for musicians
http://freshonthenet.co.uk/the-manual-by-the-klf/
remember the klf? they’re some crazy experimental musicians who became super famous in the UK and then burnt a million pounds that they got in their record deal
their main number one hit is about doctor who and their other hit is insane and is sung by tammy wynette or some other country star
any way, im reading their manual right now since james said it was useful. and i have to say, IT IS USEFUL. Like, if you can get past all the crazyness at the beginning, it definitely tells you how to make a fantastic pop song. its so much stuff that like, ive subconsciously internalized or like, had heard a million times in great songs but never tried. all kinds of other tips (like, did u know basslines are in the public domain? what??)
in any case, i dunno, if u are interested in making “number one pop songs” haha, i dont even know if i am. but im trying to make a hit song about sherlock that becomes so successful that cumberbatch sees it. hence the reading of the KLF manual.
any way, its entertaining and very well written regardless of whether or not you are trying to make music.

24th: Godspeed's thoughts on polaris:
hello kanada.
hello kanadian music-writers.
thanks for the nomination thanks for the prize- it feels nice to be acknowledged by the Troubled Motherland when we so often feel orphaned here. and much respect for all y’all who write about local bands, who blow that horn loudly- because that trumpeting is crucial and necessary and important.
and much respect to the freelancers especially, because freelancing is a hard fucking gig, and almost all of us are freelancers now, right? falling and scrambling and hustling through these difficult times?
so yes, we are grateful, and yes we are humble and we are shy to complain when we’ve been acknowledged thusly- BUT HOLY SHIT AND HOLY COW- we’ve been plowing our field on the margins of weird culture for almost 20 years now, and “this scene is pretty cool but what it really fucking needs is an awards show” is not a thought that’s ever crossed our minds.
3 quick bullet-points that almost anybody could agree on maybe=
-holding a gala during a time of austerity and normalized decline is a weird thing to do.
-organizing a gala just so musicians can compete against each other for a novelty-sized cheque doesn’t serve the cause of righteous music at all.
-asking the toyota motor company to help cover the tab for that gala, during a summer where the melting northern ice caps are live-streaming on the internet, IS FUCKING INSANE, and comes across as tone-deaf to the current horrifying malaise.
these are hard times for everybody. and musicians’ blues are pretty low on the list of things in need of urgent correction BUT AND BUT if the point of this prize and party is acknowledging music-labor performed in the name of something other than quick money, well then maybe the next celebration should happen in a cruddier hall, without the corporate banners and culture overlords. and maybe a party thusly is long overdue- it would be truly nice to enjoy that hang, somewhere sometime where the point wasn’t just lazy money patting itself on the back.
give the money to the kids let ‘em put on their own goddamn parties, give the money to the olds and let them try to write opuses in spite of, but let the muchmusic videostars fight it out in the inconsequential middle, without gov’t. culture-money in their pockets.
us we’re gonna use the money to try to set up a program so that prisoners in quebec have musical instruments if they need them…
amen and amen.
apologies for being such bores,
we love you so much / our country is fucked,
xoxoxox
godspeed you! black emperor

26th: LOVE is one of my favourite magazines. Their covers are always sooo beautiful
It’s basically a coffee table book more than it is a magazine
the shoot i did with them was amazing, we shaved off a bunch of my hair, dyed it pink and bleached my eyebrows and covered me in pink paint

26th: more great love covers
another reason they’re cool is that clearly age/race/size etc. kinda stuff doesn’t seem to effect the kind of people they put on their covers as it does with most magazines
if more of the industry could be less racist/ ageist etc. i think magazines would see their audiences growing rather than shrinking

29th: this global warming chart is stressful
im making some big plans with regards to my career that will hopefully greatly reduce the carbon foot print of grimes. my biggest goal for the next record cycle is to become the most environmentally sound touring party on the planet

30th: This is a piece in the Guardian written by Chvrches’ Lauryn Mayberry
It’s about something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately. I think most female performers have to deal with the issue of extreme online harassment that is primarily sexual and often violent in nature. whenever i hear about a new female artist blowing up i get super excited for them, but i also feel bad knowing they’ll be shortly dealing with a barrage of sexually explicit hate mail. it makes you lose faith in yourself as an artist when you are constantly reminded that you are nothing more than a fetish object to like, a startlingly large group of faceless aggressors.
Any way, this is really well written and really on point. Mad respect
