Utopia is an unreleased song by Grimes that was intended to appear on her scrapped sixth album, Book 1.

Background[]

On July 25, 2021, Utopia was performed as part of a virtual DJ set by Grimes on the "Grimes Metaverse Super Beta" Discord server (now known as "ELF TECH").[2]

On March 25, 2022, a new version of the song was played during Avalanche Summit in Barcelona, Spain.[3]

Although it was confirmed that the song would serve as the opening track,[4] the two encoded tracklists shared on elf.tech did not match this. The first track not matching the amount of letters and the second one having MUSIC 4 MACHINES as its opening track. This could have meant that the song had been removed from Book 1 or the tracklists held no significant meaning due to most of the revealed song titles not matching with the titles on the tracklists yet to be revealed.[5]

On July 7, 2023, a presave link was found with a "coming soon" button.[6]

On January 14, 2025, the full demo, along with other demos, was leaked.[7][8]

Grimes gave an explanation as to why she didn't want to release the song:[9]

❝ I don't want to release 4 year old music after going thru everything I've been thru. I do apologize rrrrllly sincerely tho. I shud do a better apology frankly - I agree. but it would be a waste of by far the best art I've ever made to shut this down and go release ancient material that is like a pale first attempt at an idea that subsequently took four years to become the darkest wisest storm ❞

❝ Utopia is the main one I'm sad abt and want to release but we still have to do stuff to it so it'll be quite diff by the time u get it ❞ - Grimes in a deleted tweet[10]

A music video for Utopia was seemingly confirmed when Grimes posted and then later deleted a tweet of the video being edited in 2023.[11] The visuals have been used in the backdrop for a Grimes' DJ set.[12]

In 2025, Grimes said that there was a music video for Utopia done, but "the song wasn't cut etc"[10]
