Background[]

The track was first seen in an early draft of the tracklist posted to Grimes' Instagram story on May 12, 2018, when it had the title of Last Call.[2] The next month it was seen in her iTunes library in a video posted to her Twitter.[3] Later in May 2019, Grimes shared a snippet of the song in her Instagram stories.[4]

An early version of the song was leaked alongside other unfinished tracks of the album on October 25, 2019 and the final version was leaked on November 24, 2019 as part of the full album leak.[5][6]

Composition[]

Meaning[]

Grimes told Apple Music:[7]

I got this weird bass that was signed by Derek Jeter in a used music place. I don’t know why—I was just trying to practice the bass and trying to play more instruments. This one feels sort of basic for me, but I just really fell in love with the lyrics. It’s more like "Delete Forever", where it feels like it’s almost too simple for Grimes. But it felt really good—I just liked putting it on. Again, you gotta follow the vibe, and it had a good vibe. Ultimately it’s sort of about an angel who kills herself and then she wakes up and she still made it to heaven. And she’s like, ‘What the fuck? I thought I could kill myself and get out of heaven.’ It’s sort of about when you’re just pissed and everyone’s being a jerk to you.

we shot 5 of these greenscreen “lyric videos” so we could have visuals for the album (doing our regular intensive videos in my state didn’t seem super wise etc etc)

But obvs w delete forever we started messing around in post and making better stuff than we thought we could.

Anyhow - Because we’re all in lockdown we thought if people are bored and wanna learn new things, we could release the raw components of one of these for anyone who wants to try making stuff using our footage. 🪐🐖🪐

below is a we-transfer file with

- the “you’ll miss me when I’m not around” greenscreen footage, some shorter snippets (might be easier to mess around with but feel free to cut up master file however, make gifs, whatevs).

- stems for the song if you wanna mess around wit audio (and some native inst tools are included). + single art etc.

- Starting April 8th Native Instruments is offering free 1 month http://sounds.com subscription and/or $25 NI Store Voucher (TBC) for remixing and some other bonus audio stuff (like, One randomly selected participant will get Komplete 12)

- We’re also working on securing free short term access to the visual tools we use (keep u posted).

- So basically, just a bunch of tools for anyone who wants to use them 💕🎮

(This is how we made delete forever if your interested). Anyway we were inspired by all the amazing art that gets sent our way, So hoping some of these things are of use when the days are long and lonely.

Anyway, I hope everybodies doing ok!

Ps other tools we’ve enjoyed using are:

Blender (free online!) (And FYI - Blender can do all the compositing and tracking needed to make stuff ) Adobe suite (for editing and stuff) Daz 3D (what we use to make @Warnymph) We’re always down for recommendations too if u guys have any

Background

With the release of the green screen video, Grimes posted an art kit featuring the raw audio and video files to WeTransfer. Grimes invited her fans to remix the song and the video using the hashtag #GrimesArtKit. Originally, the footage was shot so that her artistic team could create visuals for the album,[8] but she cited the COVID-19 pandemic as the reason she elected to involve her fans, in case they are "bored and wanna learn new things" while on lockdown.[9]

Lyrics[]

[Verse 1]
I shot myself yesterday
Got to Heaven anyway
Think I might regret it now
Tie my feet to rocks and drown

[Pre-Chorus]
If you don't bleed, then you don't die
Cross my heart and hope to fly
If you like it, then you'll make it out alive
If they could see me now, smiling six feet underground
I'll tie my feet to rocks and drown
You'll miss me when I'm not around

[Chorus]
Last call, last call
(You'll miss me when I'm not around)
Last call, last call
(You'll miss me when I'm not around)
Promise if I make it, I'll kiss you good night
(I'll see you underground)
You'll miss me when I'm down
You'll miss me when I'm down

[Verse 2]
Hurt myself again today
Doesn't matter anyway
(You'll miss me when I'm gone)
I'll make it to Heaven even if I
Have to climb the clouds and learn to fly

[Pre-Chorus]
If you don't bleed, then you don't die
Cross my heart and hope to fly
If you like it, then you'll make it out alive
If they could see me now, smiling six feet underground
I'll tie my feet to rocks and drown
You'll miss me when I'm not around

[Chorus]
Last call, last call
(You'll miss me when I'm not around)
Last call, last call
(You'll miss me when I'm not around)
Promise if I make it, I'll kiss you good night
(I'll see you underground)
You'll miss me when I'm down
You'll miss me when I'm down
Last call
(You'll miss me when I'm not around)
Last call
(You'll miss me when I'm not around)
Promise if I make it, I'll kiss you good night
(I'll see you underground)
You'll miss me when I'm down
You'll miss me when I'm down

[Outro]
You'll miss me when I'm down
You'll miss me when I'm down
You'll miss me when I'm down
You'll miss me when I'm down

Trivia[]

  • The song was initially called "Last Call".[10][11]
  • In early 2019, Grimes posted a video of herself singing the lyrics "I don't give a fuck I'm insane" together with a beat that had the same chord progression and bass texture as You'll miss me when I'm not around, but a slower tempo and twice the time signature of the drums.[12] Thus, it is thought by some to be an early/alternate version of the song. However, Grimes has recycled the same/similar musical elements in multiple songs, especially if those songs were made around the same time. For example: the melody heard throughout Ambrosia and at the end of Angel, the vocal runs heard in both REALiTi and Easily and the overall sound of Pin and Digital Calypso, particularly the "ooh" heard at the beginning of both songs' choruses. Additionally, It was created as part of a random song making exercise in under an hour in February of 2019, while You'll miss me when I'm not around has existed from as early as September 14, 2017.[3][13] The full demo of the song in question, titled "I don't give a fuck, im insane Feb.23.19 doen.m4a [I don't give a fuck, I'm insane]" was posted to Grimes' SoundCloud account and on other streaming platforms on February 23, 2025.[13] As can be seen from its file name, it was created exactly six years ago from the date of its release.[13]
  • A Remix EP of the song was released in March 2021 only on YouTube Music and SoundCloud.[14]
  • The song and its accompanying greenscreen video is featured in the film Ahriman: Death Before Dying.[15]
